The American Steam Railroad is Proud to Present:
"The Rocky Mountain Zeyphr"
Ride along from the Windy City to the Mile High City with the American Steam Railroad Preservation Association August 19th to the 25th, 2018. This 7 day adventure will take you from Chicago, Il to the gateway to the Rocky Mountains, Denver, Colorado behind Amtrak's famed "California Zeyphr".
You'll board our private cars "Moonlight Dome" and "Birch Grove" where you'll find cozy First Class accommodation. Choose either a bedroom for 2 or a roommette for 1 aboard the sleeper "Birch Grove" or a larger drawing room for 2 aboard the "Moonlight Dome", a glass-domed lounge car.
You'll depart Chicago on Sunday the 25th and be whisked through the western Illinois suburbs as you settle into your cozy accommodations. After settling in, you're welcome to enjoy the ride from the privacy of your room or join your fellow passengers in the glass-topped dome lounge for drinks and to enjoy the spectacular views afforded by the 360 degree glass roof.
As evening sets in, the dome will be set for dinner and Chef Bill (who has logged over 1 million miles around the US on private charters) will tantalize your taste buds with culinary delight. As you enjoy your meal, you'll be able to watch the sun set over the Iowa fields.
As darkness sets in, your rooms will have been transformed from the comfortable chairs of day use to the soft beds of sleeper service. You're welcome to turn in for the night, or enjoy the passing darkness from the dome, punctuated by lights of passing midwestern towns.
Monday dawns early for us as we arrive in Denver. After arrival, you and your luggage will be taken to either our hotel, or to our car rental partner, Budget Rent a car, to pick up your rental for the duration of your stay. (Car rentals are not included, however after booking, you will be given a discount code to save you money!) The remainder of Monday is all yours to explore the sights and sounds of Denver. Perhaps a trip into the Mountains, maybe catch a concert at the Redrocks Amphitheater, or stroll downtown and see the shopping and explore the social scene of Denver.
Tuesday you board a motor coach for a meld of Denver's railroad history, mining history and spectacular scenery. We'll depart the hotel bound for the Colorado Railroad Museum where you'll explore and learn the history of Colorado's narrow gauge railroading and it's importance to the United States during the silver rushes of the 1800s.
After our visit to the CRRM, you'll reboard the bus and eat lunch on the way to the Georgetown Loop Railroad, a narrow gauge railroad perched high in the mountains that used to provide silver ore service from the mines to Denver. At the Loop, you'll ride a restored train down the steep trackage and around the trestle high above the valley floor. Once at the bottom, you'll ride back up again and listen to the steam engine work hard to pull it's train back to the station.
After our bus returns us to the hotel, our vans will be available to take you to The Buckhorn Exchange, the oldest restaurant in Colorado. This cowboy-era restaurant features a western theme and interesting fare such as rattlesnake, elk and bison meat. This is one of the highest rated restaurants in town and is not to be missed!
Wednesday and Thursday are yours to explore Denver and the Rocky Mountains on your own either by Uber, on foot, or in your rental car, or join us for local mainline railfan trips. One day will be the Moffat Line from Moffat Tunnel to Denver and the other the Joint Line south of town towards Colorado Springs. These trips will feature scenic trackside locations along these lines lead by local railroad experts. These trips are complimentary optional trips for those interested in trains.
On Friday, the morning is yours then we reboard our private cars for the return trip east to Chicago. You'll speed along the flatlands of eastern Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa as you relax and pass off to dreamland in your room.
Saturday morning will find us eating breakfast as we pass through Iowa and lunch as we enter Illinois, arriving in Chicago mid afternoon where our 7 day adventure will come to an end.
Denver is the "Mile High" city and the state capitol of Colorado and there's no shortage of things to do! One of the days of our stopover, we'll be running a bus trip that is included in your ticket price that will take you to the Colorado Railroad Museum and the Georgetown Loop Railroad. These two stops are for more than just the railfan. They tell the story of how railroads helped to build Colorado and move silver and gold ore from the mines in the mountains to the big railroads in Denver. The Colorado Railroad Museum shows off it's impressive train displays of both standard and narrow guage trains encircled by a 3' gauge (or narrow guage) loop of track upon which demonstration trains operate. It's not unusual to see a "Galloping Goose" or a steam locomotive giving short rides and showing off the grounds in a uniquely Colorado style. The Georgetown Loop makes a piece of Colorado's most interesting railroading come alive as you're taken down some of the steepest trackage in the US and across the big trestle across the gorge before being pulled back up either by one of their restored steam locomotives or one of their diminutive diesel locomotives. All around the grounds are historical pieces of equipment and the scenery along the ride is breathtaking.
Not into trains? Denver has something for you too! Maybe a stroll through Denver's Botanical Gardens or catch a Rockies game at Coors Field. Speaking of Coors, the Coors brewery is a short ride away in Golden, CO. If you're not a beer fan but prefer something with a bit more bite, Stranahan's Distillery Tour may be just the ticket. After a quick sampling, why not head over to the Forney Transportation Museum or the Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum. Museums not your thing? Denver hosts a ton of ways to connect with nature! You could take your rental car (discount included with tickets!) out for a drive in the mountains. Get lost on the local roads where every turn brings you scenic vistas of the majestic Rockies. Not renting a car? There's still a ton of options to see the highlights. Grey Line and Colorado Sightseer bus lines both operate tours of the city and some of the more historical areas around the area. Taxis and Uber cars are also available to take you around town.
In your ticket packet, you'll receive a visitor's guide to Denver and the surrounding areas to help you plan your trip. You'll also receive a discount code for rental cars from Luxury Rail Travel's car rental partner, Budget Rent A Car. You'll need to reserve a car on your own with the discount code, and our complimentary shuttle will take you and your luggage from the train to the rental counter upon arrival in town and return you to the train before we go back to make things as easy as possible for you.
